What does a microphone amplifier do?

Recorders almost all have a "Line Input" for accepting a signal to record. This line input needs a strong signal, a bit like the signal that comes from a headphone socket.

The signal from a microphone is much smaller and if plugged into the line input will not normally produce an audible result.

Some recorders have a separate microphone input; some do not and require a microphone amplifier/preamplifier to increase the signal level so it can be recorded successfully.

This is what the FEL Battery Microphone Amplifier does.
